By popular request and overwhelming demand, we are scheduling some serious time on the trails this coming Saturday. If you are planning on doing the H.U.R.T. 100 this year, this is a good early season tune-up or fitness check. (Some might say reality check.) Come out for at least one repeat and the committed will…
Not only did he come in 1st place, he also takes great photo’s. Thanks Jozef!! These fit nicely with the great story Mike Muench wrote. Thanks Mike. And what about that Ed Bugarin? He keeps getting faster and more fit. What’s his secret? Click here to see the photos! Thanks again to Neal & Marian…
The air was warm and heavy with moisture even at 7:00 am as we all stood in grass just back from the Pali Overlook. Modern day warriors, men and women of Oahu, coming together in the killing grounds of the last great Hawaiian battlefield, waiting for the race stages to move out. Each filtering down…
The Dewald boys, Lindsey and Jakob, as well the rest of their family, traveled to Wisconsin to participate in the USA Triathlon Championships. Jakob finished 9th in his age group and Lindsey finished 15th in his age group. Very impressive! Team Hawaii only sent 10 kids. Out of 15 teams some with as many as…
Thanks to Neal and Marian Yasuda for directing a great race on Saturday. Everyone had fun and they had excellent post-race food. Again, lots of new faces who are fast runners showing up at these trails races. Jozef Gyrurke won the men’s race and Julie Dohenney won the woman’s individual race. On the relay side,…

For those of you who haven’t seen them yet, here are links to a couple of pictures showing everybody’s favourite ultrarunner amid cheering crowds at the Badwater post-race party: Don#1 Don#2 Don#3 Don#4 Don#5 And believe it or not, he’s even smiling in one of them! Harald
Looking at the race results for the Volcano runs and I am surprised we had anyone out for our Saturday training run. There were so many of our regular runners listed in the results that I only want to place a link. Otherwise I will surely leave a name out and someone will be upset…
Saw this article on NY Times on ultra-distance runners and diabetes and thought it would be of interest. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/26/fashion/26fitness.html
Aloha Athletes,With just returning from a trip and following Don’s Badwater adventure, I almost forgot about posting for Saturday. After reading Mike’s post just below this one, this seems pretty trivial. Yes, I know we just did this run a couple of weeks ago. Remember, it’s all good training. Saturday Training: Maunawili Out and Back…
The crooked man crab walked down the desert highway turning the light comedy of Monty Python’s Ministry of Silly Walks into a separate circle of Hell, the pain on his face adding that final twist of reality that brought people to cheer or turn their faces in horror. But the bent man didn’t hear most…
HURT enjoys the privilege of partnerships with State and Federal agencies that hold the responsibility of protecting Oʻahu public lands. Those partnerships are based upon mutual trust and cooperation and shared concerns for the ʻaina. To keep that trust and continue to be provided the opportunity to host trail events, we (HURT) must understand and abide by rules that govern our partner agencies.
HURT does organize and facilitate official trail maintenance only when coordination with our partners has occurred. All trail work is performed under the supervision of a permitted individual with advance permissions. Some trails are off-limits for HURT to perform trail maintenance due to the sensitive flora. No HURT trail maintenance will occur outside of these parameters.
HURT and its partner agencies require that no self-directed trail maintenance occur on publicly-owned trails. Any individuals performing trail work outside of official HURT-organized events, are doing so on their own accord and will be held personally responsible by State and Federal agencies for any violations. Such activity could jeopardize our relationships with partner agencies and lead to inability to use public lands for our events.
