As mentioned on the Ultra list, there was a great article in USA Today on ultra running. The article is focused around this past weekend’s Massanutten race, however it has some pretty good information about ultra running in general. Included is a mention about winner, Matthew Estes, and his troubles at the H.U.R.T. 100 in…
Alex Papadopoulos finished his first 100 mile race this past weekend at the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100. His time was 31:37:30. Great job Alex! This race is held in the George Washington National Forest in Virginia. The race has a tough reputation for the rocky terrain. Alex lived in Hawaii over the last several months…
The trails around Oahu were a little quieter this past weekend as several H.U.R.T. regulars were on separate but similar "stealth" missions to the Miwok 100K, just North of the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco. This race gets lots of attention as it is a qualifier for the following year’s (2006) Western States 100,…
I’m heading out to Spain to join a friend for an epic run. I can only take a short time off from work (1 week), so I cannot do the full journey. The plan is to connect with my ultra friend Erik in OCebreiro in Galicia Spain. That’s just over 100 miles from Santiago de…
The 2005 Swamp Romp was held today and H.U.R.T. was well represented by 6 women led by Cheryl. Other team members were Steph, Kat, Marion, Wendy, and Barbi. They all looked like they had a lot of fun. Click here to see photo’s of the event. Other H.U.R.T. runners participating on various teams were Steph’s…
The 2005 HURT Trail Series got off to a great start on Saturday, April 16, with the Top of Tantalus 7 mile run. The lookout at Pu`u `Ualaka`a State Park set the stage for the 53 eager participants as the sweeping, panoramic view featured a sunrise over Diamond Head crater, a blue Pacific Ocean with…
Contributed by Jeffery Rogers I had the pleasure of running the Kalalau Trail on Friday, March 4. For those who aren’t familiar with the trail, it provides the only land access to the rugged Na Pali coast on the Hawaii island of Kauai. Its 11 miles traverse five tropical valleys each with an exquisite waterfall,…
HURT enjoys the privilege of partnerships with State and Federal agencies that hold the responsibility of protecting Oʻahu public lands. Those partnerships are based upon mutual trust and cooperation and shared concerns for the ʻaina. To keep that trust and continue to be provided the opportunity to host trail events, we (HURT) must understand and abide by rules that govern our partner agencies.
HURT does organize and facilitate official trail maintenance only when coordination with our partners has occurred. All trail work is performed under the supervision of a permitted individual with advance permissions. Some trails are off-limits for HURT to perform trail maintenance due to the sensitive flora. No HURT trail maintenance will occur outside of these parameters.
HURT and its partner agencies require that no self-directed trail maintenance occur on publicly-owned trails. Any individuals performing trail work outside of official HURT-organized events, are doing so on their own accord and will be held personally responsible by State and Federal agencies for any violations. Such activity could jeopardize our relationships with partner agencies and lead to inability to use public lands for our events.
