Mango Madness Mahalos
Thank you all for taking on the unknown, undisclosed course that is Mango Madness! The trails were a bit muddy, but the sunny day hopefully made the pain of those hills feel a bit better. Our course this year went up Maunalaha to Moleka to Manoa Cliff…. And this is where the madness started. Almost 40 runners decided it was a good idea to hang a left and head up Pu’u Ohia to the back of the pillbox. The pink ribbons placed in the protected native plant area, coupled with someone taking some blue ribbons down made for an interesting morning! These people proceeded down Concrete Hill and then up three times to get their three rubber bands. They then had to run out to the Pauoa Flats Lookout as an out-and-back on Kalawahine Trail. The original course, and the majority of the runners continued down Manoa Cliff to go out to the Pauoa Flats Lookout. There they were treated to trivia questions and other shenanigans. The original course then took Kalawahine back to their three repeats of Concrete Hill. For both the original and “alternate” courses, it was downhill on Nahuina to Kanealole all the way home. We hope the squats, pushups, and burpees at the pillbox made this year extra painful.
The first racers to the Tantalus Pillbox always win the coveted “King and Queen of the Mountain”. This year’s winners were Hana Church and Eddie McDonald. They were great sports because they were made to run the rest of their race holding a handmade trail sign!
The originally-planned course runners got there during the second part of their run. KOM was Aaron Bennett and QOM was Nicole Duquette. And again this year, they were also the winners of the race!
