This past Friday evening several of us met for a night training run on the H.U.R.T. 100 course. I should have known it was going to be one of those nights when I called Cheryl as I was leaving Kailua and she told me it was already raining pretty hard in Manoa.
It was a good sized group that included, Joel and Steph, Bill, Paul, Don, Cheryl, Bozo, Gordon B., Bob Murphy, Gordon L., Mike, and speedy Matt S. on his road bike. Ben and a buddy were also out for a night training run.
The trails were definitely wet and muddy. Mike said it had rained several inches over the past week up in Manoa. The roots at Pahoa Flats were full of water like small lakes.
In many ways, the timing of this training run was like Loop 3 during the H.U.R.T. 100 without the 40 mile prelude. In other words, we were on the trails during approximately the same hours of the day.
More than one runner got a view of the trail up close and personal due to the wet and slippery conditions. It’s reported a couple of runners were even off the trail, examining the side of the trails (??) and that a couple of other runners were said to be wondering if helmets should be required for night loops. (???)
The best training for H.U.R.T. is getting out on the course, checking out gear, lights, and getting those legs in shape for all the roots, rocks, mud, and muck. Friday night was certainly all of that and more. Thanks to everyone for showing up and sticking it out. Remember, it’s all good training!
