Training: Fast and Wet Report
This past Saturday several of us were scheduled to run from the entrance of Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden out to Waimanalo and back. This is about 30 miles. When I showed up at about 5:50 a.m. I was surprised to see so many people.
As we gathered around in the darkness, I began to make out the faces–all men except for PJ. Jeff, Murphy, Steve, Paul, Rex, Carl, Fish. Gordon and myself. Suffice to say the testosterone was flowing as we quickly headed out the road in the garden! Was this a race or just fast training?
The trail on the way out seemed to be in pretty good shape–it certainly seemed dryer than the trails in town, even after all the rain this past week. Several of us commented that Maunawili seems like it has more rocks and less mud in comparison with other trails. However there were several new trees down and the pigs have been digging around the trail in several sections.
It seems other runners had the same idea as us–choosing to run this trail. We passed Randy H. with a couple of other runners and his wife. We also came upon Felisha, Patricia, Mike and Marion. Obviously everyone wanted to get in some good miles and wear off some of that turkey.
On the return, the trail sure seemed like it was more muddy. (?) We were lucky in that the rain held off until we were back on the roads, though I know a few got wet as the skies sure opened up in the mid-afternoon. I also heard several runners missed a turn and took either a detour down and back to the Pali or just continued down Kamehameha Hwy to the back gate of the garden.
All in all, it was good training!
Aloha, Bob
