HURT100 Trail Work and Race support opportunities
Aloha everyone,
In preparation for the 2025 HURT100, we have volunteer opportunities for Trail Work and for Race Support roles listed below. Banquet tickets are available from the HURT100.com homepage.
First we have scheduled three trail work days on the Tantalus Trail System. We encourage volunteer signups to help make the race a safe and successful event for all the participants. And, if you will be applying for HURT 2026, this will count towards your trail work requirement.
- Work day #1 – Sunday, December 15 starting 0830, in the preservation area
- Sign up here: https://hurt100.com/trail-work/
- This will be a unique event where we partner with the group who maintains the native plant preservation area between the pig gates on Manoa Cliff Trail. Those who attend will have the chance to learn more about this area and the team who maintains it.
- Tentative plan is pulling ginger and removing it from the preservation area, along with clearing after a preservation area volunteer weed-whacks along the trail corridor. Once the trail is cleared, we might do some trail grubbing to return the trail to its original path in some areas. This is the start of more work over the coming months to improve this section of trail while protecting the native plants.
- Work day #2 – Saturday, December 21 starting at 0700, Tantalus trails
- Sign up here: https://dlnr.ivolunteer.com/rsvp_trail_volunteer_event
- This would hopefully be a group of 15-20 where we can divide as appropriate and handle various trail sections. One focus might be grubbing some of the switchback along the upper portion of Nuʻuanu trail. Na Ala Hele (NAH) will be able to support with at least one person.
- Work day #3 – Saturday, January 11 starting 0700, Tantalus trails
- Sign up here: https://dlnr.ivolunteer.com/rsvp_trail_volunteer_event
- We need as many volunteers as possible for the final clearing and sweep of the trails. The goal is to clear sections of the trail that may need it based on weather events between now and then — or other options as appropriate.
General Guidelines for HURT Trail Work Days
WHAT: Trail Maintenance Day, in partnership with Na Ala Hele (NAH)
WHAT TO WEAR: Sturdy, closed-toe trail shoes, long pants, long sleeve shirt, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, mosquito repellant. Because we hike to the work sites, most runners wear their hydration packs and bring whatever they might need for a day on the trail.
WHAT TO BRING: Enough water and snacks to last up to 8 hours.
Tools will be provided for your use. You are encouraged to bring your own safety glasses and work gloves/robust gardening gloves, if you have them.
SAFETY REMINDERS:
- Stay hydrated, take breaks as needed, and wear proper gear.
- Follow trail leaders’ instructions and be mindful of your surroundings.
- Inform them of any concerns, issues or injuries.
IMPORTANT: This activity is permitted by and coordinated carefully with the State Division of Forestry and Wildlife Trails group, Na Ala Hele. Please do not, at any time, go out and do trail work on your own. It is against State regulations and would reflect poorly on the HURT organization. Your kokua is greatly appreciated!
FINAL DETAILS: Will be sent via email a day or two prior to the scheduled event. Prior to event, email matt.goda@hurthawaii.com with questions. Phone numbers will be provided for day of the events.
