Ice, hail pound Haleakala summit on Maui

Advertiser Staff

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui — The summit of Haleakala was being pummeled by ice, hail and high winds today.

The National Park Service sustained gusts of 70 mph at 11:30 a.m. at park headquarters at the 7,000-foot level. The visitor center at the 10,000-foot elevation was closed because a power outage yesterday afternoon affected restrooms and heating at the center.

Park officials warned visitors to avoid visiting the area and said the summit may be closed due to ice hazards. The wind chill factor at the summit was minus-2 degrees.
