Vi’s Top of Tantalus is a 7 mile trail race on the technical trails of Tantalus Mountain in memory of our dear HURT friend, Vi Medusky-Jones, who passed away from ALS several years ago. The start finish is at scenic Puʻu Ualakaʻa State Park overlooking Honolulu. Plan on steep climbs and descents, and, with any luck, lots of mud.
Age Requirement: Entrants for Vi’s Top of Tantalus must be 15 years of age or older. If under 18, a signed waiver by their parent/guardian must be submitted at or within 3 days of registration. The waiver form is available for download in the waiver tab. Instruction on how to submit the signed waiver is at the bottom of the form.
Cupless: We are proud that the HURT Trail Series will continue to be cupless! Bring your own reusable cup or bottle for post-race hydration.

Course Description
Vi’s Top of Tantalus is a 7-mile foot race on the technical trails of Tantalus Mountain. The course includes steep climbs and descents with rocks and roots and mud.
- The start is at Puu Ualakaa State Park at the upper parking lot. Descend through the Norfolk pines and take Ualakaa Trail to Makiki Valley Trail and continue west; turn right up Nahuina Trail to the top of Tantalus Drive (single-lane bridge); turn right on Tantalus Drive and continue slightly uphill for about 100 yards.
- Enter Kalawahine Trail on the left. Follow Kalawahine Trail until you reach the boardwalk at Pauoa Flats. Turn Right and head up the flats to the Pig Gate.
- Go through the gates and follow Manoa Cliffs to Round Top Drive crossing. Cross the road onto Moleka Trail, then turn right on Makiki Valley Trail at the end of the man-made steps. At the four-way trail intersection, turn left onto Ualakaa Trail and follow it to, and up through, the Norfolk pines to the finish at Puu Ualakaa Park.
Race Check-In Procedure
- IMPORTANT PARKING INFO: No parking inside the Pu’u ‘Ualaka’a State Park for racers. Parking inside the park is limited to volunteers. All participants must park on the shoulder of Round Top Drive outside the entrance of the State Park, with all tires COMPLETELY off of the roadway. Parking is not permitted on the grass median across from the entrance to the park. Carpooling is highly encouraged, as shoulder space is limited. The vehicle operator is solely responsible for consequences that may occur due to illegal parking.
- NOTE that if you park inside the Park, it must be in a marked stall; be aware that Park officials have issued citations for not doing so.
- Check-in Check-in on race morning will be required at a table set up in the parking lot near the restroom between 7:20 and 7:55 am. If you miss the 7:55 am cut-off for registration, you must wait until after the race has started to register and begin your run. Your time will not be adjusted for the delayed start.
- At check-in, participants will be given a bib with an assigned number.
- Once check-in is complete, hang out until the Race Directors provide final instructions and send you on your way.
- Restrooms are available at the start/finish.
- There are no aid stations on the course so runners should be prepared to carry fluids, fuel, etc. with them.
- REMEMBER: Have fun! Be courteous to your fellow runners and show your thanks to the volunteers!
- Contact us if you have any questions.
