Aloha John
HURT Ohana,
It is with a heavy heart that we share with you all that on 2/1/2023 the principal founder of the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team (HURT), John Salmonson, peacefully passed away.
Words cannot describe the passion that John had for running and more so trail running; and the extensive net he threw out to all who would listen.
Big John was a very accomplished runner. Whether it be a marathon, Western States, Vermont, Arkansas, Angeles Crest, he would be at the starting line, and finish.
When running was no longer possible for John, he led the trail running movement in Hawaii and commanded that HURT develop events for the people of Hawaii. John boldly moved forward directing both road runs and trail runs (Schofield 50 Miler, Capitol 50 Miler, Haleakala Run to the Sun, Honolulu City Lights, HURT 100). At the time it was a two-person endeavor with PJ, his wife.
John supported and mentored many young and novice Hawaii ultra runners in their attempt to conquer big races all over the world. Anyone needing training plans, advice, and encouragement would go to John, who was always generous in sharing his wisdom and experience. Generations of Hawaii runners owe their successes to the road that was paved by John and PJ.
John and PJ had a vision for HURT that few knew of. John garnered support from the running community and built HURT into what it has become, a true Ohana.
While HURT mourns the loss of our leader, we will carry on his vision and deliver it with all our passion. With heavy hearts, we will hit the trails, carrying all the wonderful memories of John with us on our journey.
Run easy and free Big John.
