Maunawili Out and Back (aka Run with the Pigs) is a 22-mile out and back course on the Maunawili Demonstration Trail. The course offers long and runnable sections following the Koʻolau mountain contour in and out of valleys treating runners to beautiful views and lush surroundings. It also offers heat, humidity, mud and technical terrain to navigate. Dehydration is real and is not your friend. Carrying sufficient fluids is mandatory.

Age Requirement Entrants for Maunawili Out and Back must be 15 years of age or older. If under 18, a signed waiver by their parent/guardian must be submitted prior to race day.  The waiver form is available for download in the waiver tab. Instruction on how to submit the signed waiver is at the bottom of the form.

Cupless We are proud that the HURT Trail Series will continue to be cupless! Bring your own reusable cup or bottle for post-race hydration.

SOLO Race Instructions

  • LOCATION: The race will start/finish on Kianaole Road just past the gate.
  • PARKING: Carpooling is highly encouraged. Please park along the side of Kianaole Road or use rideshare services. Do not block driveways.  All participants must park on the shoulder with all tires COMPLETELY off of the roadway and facing the direction of travel.  The vehicle operator is solely responsible for consequences that may occur due to illegal parking.
  • CHECK-IN: Solo runners must check in between 5:15 to 5:50 am.
    • At check-in, participants will be given a bib with an assigned number. Please display the number prominently on the front of your body for timing purposes.
    • Runners must show proof of having the equipment to carry at least 70 ounces of fluids each direction along the course.
  • TOILETS: There are NO restrooms at the Start/Finish or the aid station.
  • COURSE: This trail is heavily used and can be narrow, so please be courteous to other trail users, particularly equestrians. The trail will be marked with bright pink ribbons and flags. You may see blue ribbons on the trail. Blue ribbons = Bad
    • There will be a few course marshals at the start of the event at 3 junctions. They will not be present on the return leg; the runners need to be attentive to the flags and ribbons.
    • If you leave the course for any reason, you must report to either Neal in Waimanalo (808-554-5848) or Marian at Start/Finish (808-221-5171) so we can account for your whereabouts.
  • AID STATION: There is an aid station at the Waimanalo turn-around. Runners must leave the turn-around aid station within four hours elapsed time from their start.
    • Runners must ensure their bib number has been recorded by aid station volunteers and must fill fluid containers completely for the hot return to the finish. Participants must carry at least 70 ounces of water. This course is extremely hot and dehydration is a real threat.
  • TRAIL ETIQUETTE: The trail is open to the public. Be kind and share the trail always. Equestrians have right-of-way – do not run past the horses!
  • Contact us if you have any questions.
