About the Race

Date: July 4, 2026
Start Time: 7:00 am
Race Directors: Keith Campbell and Lory Peroff

Note: Damage from winter storms this year prevents HURT from running the west side of the customary Firecracker route.

The Kaʻena Point Firecracker is a scenic, double out-and-back trail run along the north shore of Kaʻena Point State Park. The 10.6-mile course includes beaches, dirt roads, single-track trails, and only 295 feet of elevation gain. There are few trees, so there are no roots, but the course has many, many rocks, and the sun can be hot by the end of the race. After the race, water, juice, sodas, fruit, and snacks are provided, and you can cool off in the ocean!

Dress festively! The Kaʻena Point Firecracker celebrates the 4th of July and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Age Requirement Entrants for Kaʻena Point Firecracker must be 15 years of age or older. If under 18, a signed waiver by their parent/guardian must be submitted within 3 days of registration.  The waiver form is available for download in the waiver tab. Instruction on how to submit the signed waiver is at the bottom of the form.

Cupless We are proud that the HURT Trail Series will continue to be cupless! Bring your own reusable cup or bottle for post-race hydration.

Race Check-In Procedure

  • PARKING: When you arrive at the end of Farrington Highway (Route 930), please take directions from our volunteer parking attendants. Race participants and friends must park off the pavement on the ocean or mountain side of the paved road. The dirt parking lots above and below the end of the pavement on Farrington Highway are reserved for non-race users of Kaʻena Point State Park. Carpooling is highly encouraged.
  • CHECK-IN: This is a pre-registration event; no race-day entries are accepted. Check-in for registered entrants on race morning is required at tables in the ocean-side parking lot between 6:20 am and 6:55 am. At check-in, participants are given a bib with an assigned number. Please display the number prominently on the front of your body for timing purposes. If you miss the 6:55 am cut-off for registration, you must wait until after the race has started to register and begin your run. Your time is not adjusted for the delayed start.
  • PORTABLE TOILETS: Three portable toilets are available at the entrance to the parking lot.
  • Contact us if you have any questions.

During the Race

  • ON-COURSE HYDRATION: Carry at least a 20 oz. water bottle. Race participants are typically on the course for 1-3 hours. After the sun rises above the ridge, there is no shade on the course. HURT also recommends a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • AID STATION: The Start/Finish station serves as an aid station between the two out-and-back segments of the race. There will be water, Scratch, sodas, and juice available as well as fruit and packaged snacks.
  • COURSE MARKERS: The outbound course is marked with orange training cones. Course marshals are stationed at critical turns. There are numerous alternate pathways along the outbound course, so please stay on the marked route so everyone runs the same distance. The return route is not marked because it is a straight run on the upper designated road back to the start. If you see blue ribbons or blue training cones anywhere, they mean: Wrong Way, Do Not Enter, Go Back. Please ignore green or yellow training cones.
  • TRAIL ETIQUETTE: The Kaʻena Point Trail and the Coastal Hiking Trail are open to the public. Many people use these trails to visit the Natural Area Reserve (bird sanctuary) at the tip of Kaʻena Point. Please be courteous to other State Park visitors. Beware of vehicles driving on the dirt roads we are using as a race course. Vehicles are difficult for drivers to control on the rough roads, so please yield the right of way.
  • PROHIBITED: State Parks prohibit animals except for service dogs. Alcoholic beverages are also prohibited. Racers must not enter the bird sanctuary at the tip of Kaʻena Point.

Course Map

Course Description

The Kaʻena Point Firecracker follows a modified out and back route. Outbound, the race course starts on the upper designated road above the Mokulēʻia parking lot and runs west for 0.11 miles to avoid a monk seal and her pup on the beach below. Then the race course turns down to the beach and follows the beach and designated shoreline access roads west to the bird sanctuary at the tip of Kaʻena Point. Without entering the bird sanctuary, the course runs outside the predator-proof fence to the crest of the hill. There, the course returns back downhill to the green gate at end of the upper designated road and follows the upper road east back to the parking lot. The race runs this modified out-and-back route two times for a total of 10.6 miles.

Awards

Awards are given to the first three finishers in each of the categories.
