About the Race

Date: July 5, 2025
Start Time: 7:00 am
Race Directors: Keith Campbell and Tanya Florin

The Kaʻena Point Firecracker is a scenic out-and-back trail run along the north and west shores of Kaʻena Point State Park. The 9.5-mile course includes beaches, dirt roads, single track trails, an old railroad right of way, and only 377 feet of elevation gain. There are no trees, so there are no roots, but the course has plenty of rocks, and the sun can be hot by the end of the race. After the race, water, juice, sodas, fruit, and salty snacks are provided, and you can cool off in the ocean!

Dress festively! The Kaʻena Point Firecracker celebrates the 4th of July and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Age Requirement Entrants for Kaʻena Point Firecracker must be 15 years of age or older. If under 18, a signed waiver by their parent/guardian must be submitted within 3 days of registration.  The waiver form is available for download in the waiver tab. Instruction on how to submit the signed waiver is at the bottom of the form.

Cupless We are proud that the HURT Trail Series will continue to be cupless! Bring your own reusable cup or bottle for post-race hydration.

Race Check-In Procedure

  • PARKING: When you arrive at the end of Farrington Highway, please take directions from our volunteer parking attendants. Race participants and friends must park off the pavement on the ocean or mountain side of the paved road. The dirt parking lots above and below the end of the pavement on Farrington Highway are reserved for non-race users of Kaʻena Point State Park. Carpooling is highly encouraged.
  • CHECK-IN: This is a pre-registration event; no race-day entries are accepted. Check-in for registered entrants on race morning is required at tables in the ocean-side parking lot between 6:20 am and 6:55 am. At check-in, participants are given a bib with an assigned number. Please display the number prominently on the front of your body for timing purposes. If you miss the 6:55 am cut-off for registration, you must wait until after the race has started to register and begin your run. Your time is not adjusted for the delayed start.
  • PORTABLE TOILETS: Two portable toilets are available at the entrance to the parking lot.
  • Contact us if you have any questions.

During the Race

  • ON-COURSE HYDRATION: Carry at least a 20 oz. water bottle. Race participants are typically on the course for 1-3 hours. After the sun rises above the ridge, there is no shade on the course. HURT also recommends a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • AID STATION: A small aid station is located at the course turnaround on the west end of the course where you can top off your water bottles. Light snacks may also be available.
  • COURSE MARKERS: On the north side, the course is marked with orange training cones and a few orange ribbons. Course marshals are stationed at critical turns. There are numerous shoreline access roads and alternate pathways, so please stay on the marked route so everyone runs the same distance. On the west side, most of the course is not marked because there are no intersections or alternate paths. Blue ribbons and training cones mean: Wrong Way, Do Not Enter, Go Back.
  • TRAIL ETIQUETTE: The Kaʻena Point Trail and the Coastal Hiking Trail are open to the public. Many people use these trails to visit the Natural Area Reserve (bird sanctuary) at the tip of Kaʻena Point. Please be courteous to other State Park visitors. Beware of vehicles driving on shoreline access roads.
  • PROHIBITED: State Parks prohibit animals except for service dogs. Alcoholic beverages are also prohibited. Racers must not enter the bird sanctuary at the tip of Kaʻena Point.

Course Map

The red line on the course map is the Kaʻena Point Firecracker out-and-back route that stays close to the shore. The blue line on the north side is the primary “upper” Designated Road. The Division of State Parks has asked HURT to route runners away from vehicle traffic on the primary “upper” Designated Road, so it is considered off the racecourse, except for a short segment at Road C-2 where there is no alternative route.

Course Description

The Kaʻena Point Firecracker trail run starts on the beach below the parking lot on the north side of Kaʻena Point State Park at the end of Farrington Highway (Route 930). The racecourse travels east to join the Coastal Hiking Trail. At the west end of the Coastal Hiking Trail, the course runs above the Kaʻena Point Natural Area Reserve, outside the predator-proof fence. The course then turns left and follows the Kaʻena Point Trail on the west side to the start of Farrington Highway (Route 93), where a small aid station is located. Runners then turn around and retrace the outbound route back to the start/finish.

Awards

Awards are given to the first three finishers in each of the categories.

HURT Trail Series Waiver

  • I wish to enter and participate in a HURT, Inc. Trail Series event.  I accept the rules, conditions, and regulations of the event and will comply with them.  I am aware of and assume all risks associated with this trail run, recognizing it is extremely difficult and hazardous for even well-conditioned athletes under the most favorable of conditions.  The Trail Series Runs cover difficult mountainous terrain with precipitous drop offs in a tropical rain forest and span great extremes of humidity and temperature.  I certify that (a) I am in excellent physical condition, (b) I have not been advised otherwise by a qualified medical person, and (c) I have sufficiently trained for participation in this event, on rugged trails.  I am also aware that I may be exposed to physical injury from a number of natural factors on the trail, such as lack of water, threat from wildlife, rainstorms, rockslides, and hazards from vehicular traffic attendant to running across roadways.  I understand and accept that the risks include the fact I may become injured or incapacitated in a location where it is difficult or impossible to get required medical aid to me in time to avoid additional physical injury, even death.  Knowing these facts, nevertheless in consideration of HURT, Inc. accepting this entry, I HEREBY FOR MYSELF, MY HEIRS, EXECUTORS AND ADMINISTRATORS, WAIVE, RELEASE AND DISCHARGE the HURT Inc., State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Na Ala Hele Trail Group, RRCA, any official sponsor, entity, and the officers, trustees, directors, shareholders and/or members, agents and employees of each, all medical and other personnel assisting with the Run, or any of them and any other person connected with this running event, their representatives, successors and assigns, “Run Management”, FROM ANY AND ALL RIGHTS CLAIMS OR LIABILITY FOR DAMAGE for any and all injuries to me or my property, or for damage caused by me or by any else (including Acts of God), arising out of or in connection with my participation in this event, and further indemnify and hold harmless the said Run Management from any and all liability or claims arising out of or in connection with my participation in this event.
  • I understand that if I am under the age of eighteen, a parent or guardian must approve my race participation on this waiver. I must submit the signed waiver within 3 days of registration or risk cancellation.
  • I understand that entry fees are necessary to meet the costs of preparation months in advance of the Run, and that if the Run is canceled because of Acts of God, or other circumstances beyond the control of the Run management, the entry fee will not be refunded.
  • I understand that there are no refunds for entry fees should I choose not to participate in the event.
  • I understand that I cannot roll over my entry to the next year should I choose not to participate in the event.
  • I understand that I cannot transfer my entry to another entrant as the event is limited by permitting agencies.
  • I give permission for free use of my name, voice, picture or my writings for any magazine or newspaper articles, broadcast, promotion or other account of the event.
