About the Race

Date: May 23, 2026
Location: Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area
Check-in Start Time: 6:20 am
Race Start Time: 7:00 am
Distance: 6.75 miles
Race Directors: Mark McKeague and Benito Quintana

Overview:  ‘Aiea Loop Trail is a classic O‘ahu outing for hikers and trail runners. Forested and often mud-featured, our scenic route will take you 6.75 miles into lush valleys and up along open ridges that offer views of historic Halawa Valley, the southern coast of O‘ahu, and the Wai‘anae Range to the West. The total elevation gain for this course is 1,442 feet. It is approximately 95% trail and 5% road.

From the start at the park’s lower pavilion you will run up the one-way paved road to the trailhead, and then out onto the trail. You’ll find the trail wide and welcoming for the most part, with a few single-track challenges. Prepare for some uphill fun!  We also recommend wearing good trail shoes for the best traction possible over roots and rocks and through mud bogs if it has rained.

After completing the trail portion of the course, you’ll head back down a short, steep paved road to the finish line at the lower pavilion. Make it a great finish and smile for the photographers – then grab something to eat and a goodie bag. A great morning out with HURT friends!

Age Requirement:  Entrants for ‘Aiea Loop Express must be aged 15 years or older, with a signed waiver by their parent/guardian if under 18.  The waiver is available for download at the registration site. Please follow the instructions at the bottom of the waiver form on how to submit the signed waiver prior to race day.

Cupless:  We are proud that the HURT Trail Series will continue to be cupless! Bring your own reusable cup or bottle for post-race hydration.

Health and Wellness:  Though the course is fairly short, ‘Aiea Loop Express offers no aid stations and humidity can take its toll. It is highly recommended to carry water and your favorite fuel!

Course Marking: In addition to having course marshals at major junctions of the trail to cheer you on and point you in the right direction, the course will be marked with ribbons. You’ll first follow orange ribbons, then green.  Please see the course map for further information. The trail will also be marked with BLUE ribbon – which means “don’t go that way.”   Throughout the Trail Series, remember that “Blue is Bad.”

Share the Joy: This trail is heavily used by the public. Please be courteous as you encounter others who are enjoying the trail during the race.

IMPORTANT: Race Check-In Procedure

Parking Info
  • There will be no parking available inside the Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area. Participating runners, their friends, and families must park in the surrounding residential areas – which in some cases means a mile or more down the hill from the Recreation Area.
  • When parking in the neighboring areas make sure you are not on someone’s front lawn and all tires are out of the main thoroughfare.  Be aware that HPD may issue citations for not parking legally.
  • Please make sure to respect the residents at that early hour with minimal noise disruption.
  • Because of the extremely limited street parking on the hill, it is strongly preferred that you:
    • Carpool; AND
    • arrive early, park farther down the hill and hike up to the start (a great warm-up for the race!) OR
    • catch an Uber to the start; OR
    • get dropped off at the Recreation Area’s entrance.
  • Your kōkua (cooperation) is greatly appreciated, as future permits to hold races in the ‘Aiea trail system may depend on our courtesy and compliance with these new regulations.
Check-In Info
  • Check-in on race morning will be at the pavilion by the lower lot restroom between 6:20 a.m. and 6:55 a.m.
  • If you miss the 6:55 a.m. cut-off for registration, you must wait until after the race has started to register and begin your run.  Your time will not be adjusted for the delayed start.
  • At check-in, participants will be given a bib with an assigned number.
  • Once check-in is complete, hang out until the Race Directors provide final instructions and send you on your way.
  • Restrooms are available at the start/finish.

REMEMBER:  Have fun! Be courteous to your fellow runners and show your thanks to the volunteers!

  • I understand that I cannot roll over my entry to the next year should I choose not to participate in the event.
